SOCB05H3 Lecture Notes - Rob Ford, Nomothetic
Document Summary
We obtained information that we didn"t observe from an outside source. Wikipedia, for example, is not a trustworthy source for research papers since anyone can edit it making it not reliable or valid. When we"re consuming research, we need to be aware of where it"s coming from, who created it, whose providing it to us, etc. Social has to do with large groups of people. Slide 13: what is real changes over time. Just observing, no scientific research: tradition and authority are examples of knowing by agreement rather than experience. By tradition (boys do this/girls do that) and authority (told by parents). Science is personally experiencing or doing something in order to get results. Slide 14: jumping to conclusions on the basis of only a few observations, we reached a conclusion in our minds, so now we"re only going to look at evidence that support that conclusion.
