Document Summary

Psyb01 chapter 6 - observational methods: non exp = beh measure / obs and not manipulated understanding behaviour involves the scientific method: Designing experiments or non-experiments to test those hypotheses. 1st goal of researcher is to describe setting, 2nd goal is to interpret what was observed naturalistic observations are usually used by researchers using a qualitative approach, however, quantitative data can still be collected. 2 issues facing the researcher: whether to be a participant or nonparticipant in the social setting and whether to conceal his/her purposes from other ppl. Nonparticipant observer is an outsider who does not become an active part of the setting; participant observer assumes an active, insider role. The degree to which a measurement reflects a true score rather than measurement error these measures are stable, consistent, and precise. Also indicated by high agreement among raters for some research, observers must be trained extensively, including practicing on prior data and discussing coding decisions, before coding new data.
