Nonparticipant observer is an outsider who does not become an active part of the setting; participant observer assumes an active, insider role. The degree to which a measurement reflects a true score rather than measurement error these measures are stable, consistent, and precise. Also indicated by high agreement among raters for some research, observers must be trained extensively, including practicing on prior data and discussing coding decisions, before coding new data.
