NUR 80A/B Lecture 6: Winter Week 6 - Inferential Statistics (cont'd) The t test
Document Summary
Winter week 6 - inferential statistics (cont"d) the t test. Selecting the t test for independent (different) groups. In the means between two groups (not more) When people in the two groups are different people (ie a control group and an experimental group) Used in experiment and quasi- experimental designs with a treatment group and comparison group. Example: enterostomal nurses are interested in comparing a new wound care product with traditional methods. Pediatric nurses are interested in comparing the difference in preoperative anxiety scores between boys and girls. The values must be independent (people in the control group are not the people in the experimental group) The dependent variable data must be interval or ratio level. Data should be normally distributed if the sample is small. The t distribution is determined by df (therefore depends on sample size) The larger the difference between sample means, more likely t-test will be significant. Larger the sample the less chance of error.
