Social structure in early modern europe: population and settlement. Can use city plans as historical documents. Florence: from ancient rome, one of the largest cities in europe during the early middle ages. Cities continue to expand and build city walls, to accommodate populations that kept increasing, populations coming in from rural areas. Not all cities start out as roman settlements. The black death 1348: starts in italy and moves up across the continent, Cities don"t actually replenish their population, they rely on people moving in from the rural areas to grow. Limited food supply, have to rely on local food supply even port villages. By 1600 northern europe has of the population of europe. At one point, more women were moving to cities, leaving rural life with few opportunities and finding life in cities.
