The study of child development: then and now. Is a change in number or amount, such as in height, weight, size of vocabulary, or frequency of communication. Is a change in kind, structure, or organization. Change is discontinuous: it is marked by emergence of new phenomena that can"t be anticipated easily on basis of earlier functioning. Most people show an underlying stability in aspects of personality and behavior: early approaches. Baby biographies journals kept to record early development of a single child (cid:149) Dietrich tiedemann"s observations of his infant son"s sensory, motor, language, and cognitive development. Observed sucking to be acquired, not instinctive. Charles darwin theory of evolution, first emphasized the developmental nature of infant behavior. His journals lead to baby biographies: developmental psychology becomes a science. Science unlocked mystery of conception and were arguing about the relative importance of nature and nurture. Taught that people could learn about themselves by learning what influenced them as children.
