Performers create their parts as they play them. Influenced development of new styles in popular music & work of symphonic composers. Spontaneous, music is not written down/ rehearsed beforehand. Try not to improvise the same way twice. Improvised parts sound more casual & less organized than written / memorized parts. Horns make up & play new melodies this time. Chord progress in accompaniment guides the notes they choose for new melodies. Player is improvising when he stands up to solo. Parts played by several players in unison are prepared beforehand. Swinging feeling is music that makes you want to dance, clap your hands, or tap you feet. Achieved through steady beat & performance with great spirit. Factors that cause swing feeling: constant tempo. Steady beat is nearly always kept in jazz. Musicians play notes slightly before/ after the beat: cohesive group sound. Achieved when every member"s playing is precisely synchronized with others.
