Some factor of intelligence relate to each other. Consists of 4 important components: verbal reasoning- ability to understand vocabulary, quantitative reasoning- number sense, abstract visual reasoning- paper-folding, copying, short-term working memory- memory for sentence and digit. Found 7 factors: verbal comprehension, verbal fluency, number, spatial visualization- rotation of object in mind, memory- short-term working memory, reasoning, perceptual speed- how fast one understands information. Many tasks eventually cluster and belong to one skill. Reduced the seven factors further into two factors: fluid intelligence. Tasks like rotation of object visually and fast problem solving skill. Speed capacity, ability to see relationship between number and shape, math. Skill decreases as age increases: crystallized intelligence. The more you reduce, the more general and fundamental the factors become. Theory was not based on factor analysis, but neuropsychological theory. Lose ability due to damage in brain region that is responsible for that type of skill.
