EESA06H3 Lecture Notes - Llaima, Mount Hudson
Document Summary
The most dangerous place on the planet due to enormous earthquakes and dangerous volcanoes. Magma has silica in them so it stiffens the magma and as a result gases cannot come out: stuff are blown up in the air to massive eruptions, pyroclastic debris. Sudden release of gas propels this system. Deepest part of the ocean system is challenger. The floor of the pacific ocean is being pushed the surrounding down/buckled underneath landmasses: trenches identify the subduction zones, recycling of the earth"s crust. The continents surrounding the rim are growing at the expense of the oceans: oceanic crust that is being subducted gets melted along continents and become a part of the continent and magma erupt. Dying oceans make bigger continents- adding to the continent while recycling oceanic crust. Destructive/eruptive volcanoes: sea floor sediments are scraped off the descending plate and are added to the continent, thereby increasing it in size. Older, heavier plate goes under the newer plate.
