Document Summary

Tectonics is the study of the origin & arrangement of the broad structural features of the. Earth"s surface, including not only folds & faults, but also mountain belts, continents, & earthquake belts. Plate tectonics theory better explains earth"s features as opposed to tectonic models. Idea that the earth"s surface is divided into a few large, thick plates that move slowly. This theory can explain so many diverse features of the earth = earthquake, the origin of mountain belts, the origin of sea-floor topography, the distribution & composition of volcanoes, etc. All these things can be a result of plate interactions at plate boundaries. Intense geological activity occurs at plate boundaries where plates move away from one another, past one another, or toward one another. 8 large plates & few dozen smaller plates = outer shell of earth (crust) Combination of 2 pre-existing ideas: continental drift & sea-floor spreading.
