Document Summary

Looks at health policy from a historical point of view. Health care was limited to the colonial elite. Split into three time periods. receive health care unless there was economic gain or for self preservation of the colonizers. The health care was centered in the urban areas because that"s were the colonizers were. Health care was done in the bio-medical model. Campaigns were used to control health problems, instead of societal solutions. Indigenous healthcare was looked down upon and not seen as legitimate healthcare methods. Health was linked into economical and political interests. Western powers went into third world countries to improve the health care in order to win the hearts and minds of the populations. This was also done to create markets during a time when european markets were damaged due to ww2. Urban centers still have more health care infrastructure. A link between healthcare and development is seen, a focus on primary healthcare.
