PSYC 2330 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Clark L. Hull, Drive Theory, Confounding
Document Summary
Definitions of terms on slides are required for midterms and exams. Re-read lecture notes and add notes that clarify understanding from readings assigned from the text. Review: drive, ethology instincts are behaviours. These behaviours are passed on because they have or had. Drive theory (clark hull: hull"s model of behaviour is mechanistic and based on homeostatic drive reduction, habits (stimulus-response associations) become stronger as a function of how often they are followed by satisfying events. Drive is a general pool of energy that can activate innate and learned behaviours. There are several sources of drive, but drive itself is nonspecific and nondirective. Needs may include tissue deficits, tissue damamge, hormonal changes etc All those needs activate a single drive which activates general activity, new learning (ie. searching for a solution to satisfy your need), and previous habits (what behaviours have been performed in the past that satisfy this need)
