One of the most widely cited definitions: a social group characterized by common residence, economic co-operation, and reproduction. It includes adults of both sexes, at least two of whom maintain a socially approved sexual relationship, and one or more children, own or adopted, of the sexually cohabitating adults . Another definition: a social arrangement based on marriage and marriage contract, including recognition of the rights and duties of parenthood, common residence for husband, wife and children, and reciprocal economic obligation between husband and wife . Excluded: same sex couples, common law couples, lone-parent families couples without children. If use narrow definition of family as including legally married heterosexual couple with children living at home = 34% of canadian families. Understanding of what constitutes family changes over time. Census canada definition: 2006 2 definitions.
