Document Summary

Family: a social group characterized by common residence, economic co- operation, and reproduction. It includes adults of both sexes, at least two of whom maintain a socially approved sexual relationship, and one or more children, own or adopted, of the sexually cohabiting adults. Family (another prominent definition: a social arrangement based on marriage and the marriage contract, including recognition of the rights and duties of parenthood, common residence for husband, wife, and children, and reciprocal obligations between husband and wife. Ask yourself who is included and who is excluded from such a definition. Also, consider whether there is a cultural bias to this definition. Nuclear family: includes an adult male, adult female, and their offspring. Extended family: includes multiple generations of adults living with their spouses and children. As children become adults, they may start to distinguish between their family of orientation and their family of procreation. Family of orientation: the family into which they were born.
