Background and context
The pulmonary systems of animals are intended to enable diffusion of gases. In mammals, the nasal cavity warms and humidifies the air. The air then passes through the pharynx, the tracheal, and then into the lungs. Air enters the lungs via the branched bronchi and travels to the bronchial tubes, which contain the very first location of gaseous exchange.
