Background and context
p53 is a tumor suppressor, it negatively regulates the cell cycle. p53 protein can analyze the changes in the genome as a result of deficiency of oxygen supply or stress. p53 can then signal the cell to undergo apoptosis or it will arrest the cell cycle progression. This will prevent the passing on of the damaged genome to the next generation of the cells.
