Background and context

Genetic drift explains random fluctuations within all kinds of gene variants in a population. When variants in a gene are seen that are known as alleles, then genetic drift takes place. These variations in alleles are measured with the changes in allele frequencies. These variations in alleles will increase and decreases over time. As soon as genetic drift starts, the allele is either lost through a population or allele present in a population. Both possibilities lessen the genetic diversity of a population.
