Normal blood pressure is 120/80 mm Hg. The top number is called systolic blood pressure because it is due to the contraction of the ventricles, and the bottom number is called diastolic blood pressure because it is measured during the relaxation of the ventricles. Hypertension occurs when blood pressure readings are higher than these numbers—say, 160/100.
