Provides a pathway for the circulation of csf through the cns. Composed of fluid filled cavities (ventricles) deep within the brain. Separated at the midline by the septum pellucidum. Corpus collosum runs on the roof of the lateral ventricle. The thalamus makes up a portion of the walls. Lateral ventricle communicates inferiorly via the interventricular foramen (foramen of munroe) 3rd ventricle is a thin slit-like structure located midline just inferior to the lateral ventricles. The third ventricle communicates via the cerebral aquaduct (in the midbrain) which reaches the 4th ventricle by traversing the posterior portion of the midbrain. Csf exits the ventricular system through either: Foramen of magendie/median apeture located in the posterior wall, to the cisterna magna to the suba space of the spinal cord. Foramen von luschka/lateral aperutes communicate with the cerebellopontine angle cisterns to suba space of the brain. Central canal directly from the 4th ventricle into the spinal cord.
