Attitudes : lasting, general evalution of people, objects, or issues. Functions of attitudes : explain how attitudes facilitate social behaviour; attitudes exist because they serve some function for the person (determined by a person"s motives). Components of attitudes : helpful in knowing the underlying reasons of attitudes: utilitarian function : related to the basic principles of reward and punishment. Cxs value harmony among their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. They are motivated to maintain uniformity amoung these elements. If necessary, cxs will change their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours to make them consistent with other experiences. Self perception theory : provides an alternative explanation of dissonance effects (when a person is confronted with inconsistencies among his/her own attitudes or behaviours, he/she will take some action to resolve this unpleasant psychological state) Relevant to the low-involvement hieararchy, since it involves situations in which behaviours are initially performed in the absence of a strong internal attitude.
