Islam was transformed from an ethnic religion to a universal one with the abbasid. Revolution from the umayyad and previous arab eras. Islam came about in the 7th century in the arab world to the arab people in mecca. There were two main periods during the rise of islam during this time, the medina versus the mecca period. The mecca period was a rough period where muhammad"s teachings and followers were greatly marginalized. Arab society during this period had no laws thus protection came from those you were related to, your tribe, or clan. Muhammad was preaching against the powerful families of mecca and any powerful person following muhammad"s teachings were thus cutting off from their ties and protection, leaving them vulnerable as they were taking a huge risk. The medina period was much more safer and more successful in gaining followers for islam.
