Document Summary

Science: can refer to a body of knowledge. Science of biology is the study of living organisms. Scientific method: allows us to solve problems and answer questions efficiently and effectively. Propose a hypothesis must be testable and falsifiable. Falsifiable: observations/set of observations could prove it false. Hypothesis: a proposed explanation for one or more observations. Must be testable however not all hypotheses are. Scientific theory: explanation for a set of related observations that is based on the well supported hypotheses from several different independent lines of research. Process used to construct this hypothesis is called inductive reasoning. Inductive reasoning: combining a series of specific observations to discern a general principle. If inductive reasoning that led to a hypothesis seems to make sense does not mean the hypothesis is true. Hypothesis testing is based on deductive reasoning or deduction. Deductive reasoning: involves using a general principle to predict an expected observation. Prediction: concerns the outcome of an action, test or investigation.
