Document Summary

In north america: . 4 billion is spent on otc medications for stomach problems e. g. antacid, alka-seltzer. Even more is spent on prescription medications: billion. The purpose of the gastrointestinal tract is the breakdown of food. Chemical responsible for the breakdown of food in the stomach: hydrochloric acid (used to clean toilet bowls but we have a lower concentration) Stomach: breakdown of large molecules e. g. carbohydrates and proteins. Small intestine: long and narrow, metabolism of fats. Neutralizes the acidic medium from the stomach into the basic medium in the small intestines. Under some conditions the hcl in the stomach goes out of balance (excessive production): Smoking (also effect the lungs and the bladder) Especially aspirin: affects the prostaglandins which provide for stomach protection. Acid + base salt + water. Hcl + sodium bicarbonate sodium chloride + water and releases carbon dioxide. Hcl + nahco3 nacl +h2o + co2. Chemical reaction: the breaking of bonds and the reforming of other bonds.
