The study of past cultures through the material they produced and left behind. Fixtures: fixed objects found in excavation that cannot be easily removed from a site. Artifacts: small objects found in excavation that can be moved. **all material culture is of interest, from the cheap to the expensive, because it tells us something about human activity and human value systems. Goal of arch: to reconstruct the past. Classical archeology goal: to reconstruct the societies that flourished in the central and west mediterranean. Interpretation, analysis of data: artifacts themselves and their relationships with each other. Excavation by removal of horizontal layers or strata of soil. Stratum: a deposition of soil accumulated over time (plural: strata) Purpose of site grid: to provide a basic reference and orientation for the site and topographic features ex. rivers, roads, trees. To locate objects and features found in relation to one another. To produce an accurate site plan in the end.
