Document Summary

The importance of scientific research is perhaps disregarded by many in this modern world. Besides satisfying human curiosity, scientific research helps us understand and appreciate the complex world in which we live in. It contributes to the knowledge about how our bodies work, prevent and treat disease, help save or prolong human life and even allow us to explore beyond earth and into the cosmos. Funding for research typically comes from two sources: corporations, through research and development departments and the government, through universities and specialized government agencies. The manhattan project and its studies on atomic energy would have to be one of the largest and most successful research projects ever undertaken by mankind. When the project initially started the federal government expended ridiculous amounts of money on it. It originally had no prospect of commercial use and seemed like a complete waste. Nasa funded by the government, advances scientific knowledge about our home planet and our universe.
