Creating something musically that has not been created before. To improvise can be daunting, the idea of creating something musically can be overwhelming, that"s why music therapist use techniques in a directed way so that to provide some sort of a structure. Called playing rules, example would be to use only the black keys on the piano, and the therapist would support the client with only using the black keys. Playing on the black keys always sound good. This is to encourage the client and gain confidence, eventually breaking out of the rules. There are many techniques, such as mirroring, this is where the therapist does exactly the same thing that the client does at the same time.
