Tubes made out of metal mesh that treat narrowed arteries. In patients with heart disease caused by buildup of plaque. Helps reduce chest pain, treat heart attack, open arteries. Common complication is blood clots resulting in narrowing of the arteries again. To prevent this patients are often put on blood thinners (aspirin, clopidogrel, prasugrel, tricagrelor) Takes blood vessels from parts of your body (chest, leg, arm) to bypass a blocked artery resulting in more blood and oxygen flowing to the heart. One end attached to aorta and the other to a artery below blockage creating an alternate route. 2 types of surgery: traditional (repairs or replaces heart valve) or balloon valvuloplasty (smaller incisions) Mitral valve most common repaired heart valve. Commissurotomy-valve leaflets are separated to widen opening. Decalcification- calcium deposits removed to make opening flexible. Reshape- cut leaflets and sewn back to proper shape to help closing.
