3 important intergroup relations concept: stereotypes: are generalizations about a group- beliefs and cognitions. Stereotypes are unfair, we cannot generalize to every single group: prejudice: biased emotional responses to a group- usually hate prejudice- a dislike to someone because of their group membership. Also love prejudice- a loving for someone because of their group membership. Erikson"s attitudinal component: reflecting emotion based attitudes- as its root prejudice is an emotional response: discrimination: behaviour towards a person because of their group membership. Using one of these relation concepts usually means you use both the others. Prejudice in group processes: when 2 or more groups find themselves in conflict or competition. Other theories say you don"t need conflict over stuff to hate one another. Social identity theory: the group you belong to has an impact on your self esteem- therefore you want those groups to be doing better than other groups.
