40 distinct basic tastes rue to some extent: there are various receptors in the taste buds, we all pretty much have the same number of taste buds but not everyone due to age as we age our senses deteriorate, there is a significance between how men and woman taste, nobody is born with the extinct to not eat certain things, two distinct tastes sweet and salt but when we are born we crave sweet only, sweet because when we are born we have an urge to eat breast milk is sweet the lactose in the milk causes us to yearn for sweetness, after four months we develop a taste for salt but we aren"t born with it, these are the two tastes that drive us in the dietary direction, too much sugar or too much salt lead to health issues, our tongues are also designed to alert us to problems.
