Module 6 review questions: briefly describe the regulatory functions of the endocrine system. Control of blood glucose and other nutrients. Immune system regulation: describe each of the different functional classifications of chemical messengers. Provide an example of each and the function of each example (use glossary). Autocrine chemical messengers: stimulates cells that originally secreted it and sometimes nearby cells of the same type. Example: white blood cells; white blood cells can stimulate their own replication so that total number of white blood cells increases rapidly. Paracrine chemical messengers: local messengers; secreted by one cell type but affects neighboring cells of a different type; secreted in extracellular fluid. Example: histamine; released by white blood cells during allergic reactions and stimulate vasodilation in nearby blood vessels. Neurotransmitters: chemical messengers secreted by neurons that activate adjacent cell (could be another neuron, muscle cell, or glandular cell); secreted into synaptic cleft as opposed to the bloodstream.
