BPK 142 - LABORATORY REVIEW QUESTIONS - PART 2 (Week 8 Q1)
Laboratory #8 – Nervous System Anatomy, Reflex Actions, and Motor Learning
1. Be able to identify the structures listed on page 20-4 in the BPK 142 Laboratory Manual
and give one function for each structure.
Premotor cortex:
- Located just in front of the primary motor cortex in the brain.
- Prepares the body's muscles for the exact movements the will make.
- The premotor cortex allowed you to control your movements + make choices about
them. Involved in planning of movements.
- Ex. you squeezed toothpaste, not lotion onto your toothbrush because of the premotor
cortex.
Primary motor cortex:
- Located in dorsal area of frontal lobe
- Generates neural impulses that control the execution of movement
- Every voluntary movement you make is controlled through the primary motor cortex
- Signals in your brain are sent to the muscles, telling them to make a movement
Somatosensory cortex:
- Located in lateral parietal lobe
- Receives all sensory input from the body.
- Neurons that sense feelings in our skin, pain, visual, or auditory stimuli, all send their
information to the somatosensory cortex for processing.
Frontal lobe:
- Important in the control of voluntary motor functions, motivation, aggression, mood, and
olfactory (smell) reception.
Parietal lobe:
- Principal center for receiving and consciously perceiving most sensory information, such
as touch, pain, temperature, and balance.
Occipital lobe:
- Receives and perceives visual input and is not distinctly separate from the other lobes.
Temporal lobe:
- Involved in olfactory (smell) and auditory (hearing) sensations and plays an important
role in memory.
- Its anterior and inferior portions, called the “psychic cortex,” are associated with
functions such as abstract thought and judgment.
