Unit 8: Flexibility
- Flexibility: range of motion about a joint. Specific to joint and joint action.
- Major limitation to flexibility = tightness of soft tissue structures (ex. Joint capsule, muscles, tendons,
ligaments)
- Goniometry: measurement of angles created at human joints by bones of body. Used to measure +
document amount of active/passive joint motion.
- Active ROM: arc of motion attained by a subject during unassisted voluntary joint motion.
- Passive ROM: arc of motion attained when examiner moves the patient’s body part through a range of
motion w/o effort by the subject or assistance from the subject.
- Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology Activity Training for Health (CSEP-PATH) resource manual:
battery of tests to assess muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, aerobic endurance, body comp.
- Objectives of program: establish a standard field test of fitness, to create awareness for fitness + proper
lifestyle, to provide norms + health benefit ratings for Canadians 15-69 yo in order to motivate them in their
fitness pursuits.
- sit and reach flexibility test
- This test evaluates flexibility of muscles of lower back + posterior thigh region
- Tightness in low back muscles + hamstring muscle group ---> associated w/ low back pain
-Equipment: different test batteries in NA use diff initial scale settings at foot line of test apparatus.
CSEP-PATH Physical Activity, Fitness, and Lifestyle Assessment test battery uses modified Wells and Dillon
flexometer with the ruler arm attached at 26 cm mark. (figure 8-2).
- Measurement of joint range of motion: 12-14 inch plastic universal goniometer
Study Questions #8
1. List four sources of error in the sit-and-reach flexibility test.
- Variations in arm, leg and trunk length can make comparisons between individuals misleading.
- This test is specific to the range of motion and muscles and joints of the lower back and hamstrings, and
may not be relevant to other parts of the body.
- flexing of knees during trial
- the amount of pre stretching and warm up could affect results.
- measurement may be taken inaccurately due to human error
- feet may not be pressed firmly to baseboard
- subject may jerk forward
2. What was the Health Benefit Zone Rating on the sit-and-reach test? What does this rating mean?
- test evaluates the flexibility of the muscles of the lower back and posterior thigh region
- measures lower back and hamstring flexibility
3.Distinguish between active range of motion and passive range of motion.
Active range of motion is the arc of motion attained by a subject during unassisted voluntary joint motion. Passive
range of motion is the arc of motion attained when the examiner moves The patient’s body part through a range of
motion without effort by the subject, or assistance from the subjecT.
4. Define the term “goniometry.”
Goniometry refers to the measurement of angles created at human joints by the bones of the body.
5. Why is precise measurement of joint range of motion important?
To determine if the ROM of a joint is impaired, helps physiotherapists To identify impairments and assess
rehabilitative status.
