81 views9 pages

Document Summary

The nature of roles of intellect and will. Intellect is what makes humans free; it is one central way in which we are made in god"s image. Speculative: deals with beliefs, grasps truths about the world. Rational: deals with actions, makes judgements on what it would be good to do. Will is the rational appetite that responds to intellect: inclines us towards objects of our desires. These are the capacities that facilitate action, as all human action is purposive or undertaken for some end which makes it teleological. Ends are the final cause or explanation of action, and are the answer to why did you do that. The ultimate end is the first mover that gets a train of action going. Intellect and will are the source of human freedom; we are free in the sense that we are capable of responding to reason.
