Dichotic listening cannot be sure if the subjects are paying attention and listening to us in a conversation. Subjects would typically see two physically different passages of text that are embedded within each other. Subjects would be instructed to read just one of the passages and to ignore the other. General result: the subjects were usually unaware of the semantic content of the unattended passage. But sometimes remembers words they were told not to attend to if these words were salient. However, sometimes, the words subjects were instructed to ignore may be processed for meaning.
