Focused on how social power is abused, looks at dominance issues. How inequality is enacted, reproduced, & resisted by text & talk in the social & political context. Focuses on inequality & how power is wielded by individuals, groups & institutions, or where ever power is defined in terms of control. Argues that power in relationships is displayed through language. How do they control minds & actions of less powerful? (think of president) Most people only have control over talk with friends, family, & co-workers. Most of us have to take the one down" position in everyday interactions as well -> Police, revenue canada, student loans, parents, bosses, etc. Control of talk includes macro things like time, place, events. Also control on micro level like who controls the type of speech acts, the turns, the length of pauses, eye contact, who holds the floor. Powerful people are skilled at using forms of denial -> hard to pin them down.
