Space is physical, social and cosmological (part of greater universe) and cultural. Maps are arbitrary, physical and ideological guides. Cosmology/cosmic concept: humans make and live in spatially divided worlds that change indiv"s experiences (ex. diff. countries, continents, gives sense of where we are and the world we live in. Land ownership, idea that ppl can own a piece of the planet: also symbolizes power. Matters out of place: anything this doesn"t t into a particular system (ex. homeless) Space keeps people in and out (ex. court, churches, of ces, govt. buildings) Spatial segregation could be due to race, language or neither. Two ways to organize space in europe: ex. Place, the poor lived in favelas); chinatowns/k-towns: division by sex in washrooms.
