Document Summary

Analysis of vitamin c in tablets and in tang. Sir isaac newton showed that white light could be separated into a continuous spectrum (red to violet) by using a prism. Gaseous discharge tubes (ex. neon signs) emit a discontinuous spectrum. Ex. passing light from a hydrogen discharge lamp through a prism gives 4 discrete lines of varying intensities in the visible region. In discharge tubes, atoms of the gas are excited by the passage of an electric current from an electrode at one end to an electrode at the other end. Photons are emitted when excited atoms return to their lower (ground) state. The wavelength and energy of these photons are determined by the energy levels for that element, therefore each element has a unique spectrum. A bit of the element is atomized and excited in the flame, causing a change in flame colour. Explosive excites atoms of an element to higher energy orbitals.
