Document Summary

Mec e 260 section 1 introduction to design. Engineering designs are open ended problem statements. They require knowledge from different fields and yield many solutions. Engineering design is a process of devising a system, component or process to meet a desire need: must know what the customer wants. Strongly iterative: defining a problem, product specification, brainstorming. Mildly iterative: design details, generate models and drawings, prototypes. No iteration: manufacturing, testing, shipping, monitoring and recycling. The later a design is changed the higher the cost. Class 1: major inventions, lots of maybes, research and testing. Class 2: knowledge sources are known but problem solving strategies may be flexible. (innovation) Phase 2: conceptual design, pick a solution. Design concept in which all aspects of the product (manufacture, concept, function and assembly) are performed simultaneously. Identify expectations and goals: project team. Distribute tasks to team members that are most suited: team leader. Coordinate individual efforts and ensure everyone is going in the same direction.
