Deviance exists as some sort of characteristic inside a person (internal) The external world is where you find deviance: subjective definitions: no common characteristic, someone must tell us, privileges internal evaluations. People may have different subjective views on things (i. e. : homosexual marriage) based. Within the past 100-150 years, there has been a movement from the objective to the subjective perspective. Deviance was in the realm of the church, society, religion (cid:0) it was something that came from bad, evil influences (cid:0) the demon . Today, this idea of deviance being external to us is no longer valid. External: bad angel vs good angel (on shoulder) (cid:0) depicted as pulling us in either direction. The social structure is shaped on how we approach demons. The masses turn against the few due to this perspective. The inquisition created elites and a power structure.
