Major agencies of the criminal justice system. Offender is caught and rightfully sentenced = crime. Society sets out norms, and a violation of any of these norms to certain extent = crime. Problem with this definition is that society"s values and beliefs are constantly changing, therefore norms would also change, as a result, definition of crime would constantly be changing. Argue that society is not always the best judge about what a crime is because norms are always changing. Constructionists believe there is a negotiated process between offenders and authority, which is why there is overrepresentation of some people in prisons. 91% admitted they committed a crime for which they could be prosecuted, 9% said they have not committed a crime. With advances in society and technology, it is becoming increasingly easier to offend. There is a negotiated process between offenders and authorities, as a result, some people get the white glove treatment (if you ain"t white, you ain"t right)
