PSYC 1010 Study Guide - Final Guide: Frequency Distribution, Unimodality, Histogram
Chapter 2 1010 exam study
Frequency distributions
•Organize raw score into Frequency distribution: pattern of a set of numbers by
displaying a count or proportion for each possible value of a variable
•Frequency table: a visual depiction of data that shows how often each value
occurred, how many scores were at each value
•Grouped frequency table: allows researchers to depict data visually by
reporting the frequencies within a given interval rather than the frequencies for a
specific vale (range)
•Histogram: a graph that looks like a bar graph, but depicts one variable, baed
on scale data y-axix is frequency ( used for group or not)
•Frequency polygons: line graph, x-axis represents value or midpoint of interval,
y-axis is frequency
Shapes of Distributions
•Normal Distribution: frequency distribution that is a bell-shaped, symmetric,
unimodal curve
•Skewed distribution: one of the tails of the distribution is pulled away from the
centre
•Positively skewed: tail of the distribution extend to the right, in a positive
direction
•Floor effect: a situation in which a constraint prevents a variable from taking
values below a certain point
•Negatively skewed: a distribution with a tail that extends to the left, in a
negative direction
•Ceiling effect: a situation in which a constraint prevents a variable from
taking on values about a given number
