Actinopterygil: (in fresh water): fish are salty, but they can"t just swallow water. So the water that does enter gills/pharyngeal cavity, it gets filtered by the nephron and essential minerals taken out. They make a dilute urine to excrete which maintains osmotic balance. (salt water): fish aren"t salty. so they drink water and get rid of excess salt. Gnathosoma, chondrichthyes: two loops: respiratory and body. >carotid (head) or systemic arches (body)->join to form dorsal aorta. Bunch of arteries come off dorsal aorta. Venous: sinus venosus collects blood from everywhere before it goes back to heart. Starts off as a 3 chambered heart. Anterior and posterior vena cavas are the long pipes that veins merge to. Lamprey: unique suction feeding mechanism with keratinized teeth. Breaks through the skin, creates a wound which oozes out blood rather than tissue. Pedicellate teeth (two pedisils on top of where the crown sits) Tongue sticky at the end to trap insects.
