CMN 2130 Study Guide - Final Guide: Interpersonal Communication, Social Penetration Theory, Uncertainty Reduction Theory
Document Summary
Communication is relational, fundamental idea behind this chapter. We seek to communicate (known to be known), but the process can often be messy. Because everyone is different, it causes issues with communicate (noise) Communication can be defined as symbolic interpretation of messages between senders/ receivers. Verbal/ non verbal cues, transferring knowledge. Words are usually the most common communication symbols. No symbol that we create adequately represents what we actually mean. Other symbols we use to communicate can be facial expressions, body language, tone of your voice, logos used by companies. We are always communicating symbols whether we realize it or not. In communicating we select and interpret symbols (hersey and blanchard call this encoding and decoding) For communication to be effective, the sender and receiver have to share the same meaning of the message/ symbols can be cause by different cultures, generations, people"s mood, history, new or nervous situations, love, etc. Communication is a process which is dynamic and continuous.
