Marcus argues with a reimagining of the project of holistic ethnography that does away with the distinction between the micro-level of local cultures and the macro-level of world systems. No account of a culture can be fully comprehensive. Wider systems are present on a local scale, and can be effectively studied as such through ethnographic approaches. Focus on contextualization and embedding, rather than a claim to comprehensiveness. Requires a very close connection with the life-world that one studies but does not necessarily mean that one has to become a fully immersed member of that life-world. Working out what people think they are up to. Data that can be found and observed, rather than requiring active engagement.
