Set and setting: set refers to the internal environment/mindset that you have at the time of taking a drug. Various physical, emotional and social factors can affect the set. Setting refers to the drug user"s external environment. If you are at a rave, the drug will produce a greater effect than when you take it in a quiet place. Addiction is defined as a persistent dependence on behaviour or substance. The physiology of addiction: neurotransmitters influence receptor cites (nerve cells) so that nerve cells are fooled to believe that they have enough neurotransmitters and shut down production of these substances temporarily.
