Idle No More:
An Analysis at the Efforts of Indigenous Protesting
Introduction
Despite the conventional notion attached to the image of Canada which consists of the
peaceful, polite, and harmless Canadians, history proves that the current ‘prideful’ Canada were
not always so prideful. The harsh treatment that the indigenous community faced served as an
example in which Canadians continually took advantage of the minority. Accordingly, the
measures of ethnic and racial supremacy resulted in the oppression in regards to Aboriginal
rights and values. The lead up of Canadian legacy consisted of the constant integration and
imposing of the colonizing countries’ practices in order to force a process of assimilation.
Accordingly, protest movements such as Idle No More seeks to ensure that the aboriginal
community and their members are not being taken advantage of. In specific, the movement
targets the distinct controversy surrounding the omnibus bill, Bill C-45, which was just another
legislation that adds to the felonious acts that Stephen Harper and the Conservative federal
government impose in regards to the legislative abuse of aboriginal rights within treaties
(Staggenborg & Ramos, 2011) . This essay focuses on the extent to which Idle No More
mobilized the indigenous community in Canada as it sparks the imagination of other movements,
expands the forms of indigenous protesting, and created unanimity between environmentalists
and other social justice movement actors.
Subheading #1: Bill C-45

of representation and priority. Although addressing many issues, the Idle No More movement
