Manner differ across cultures because people are socialized to different sets of norms and cutoms. Western europe, and likewise, other modernizing cultures, was transformed as the manners of the aristocracy trickled down to govern the behaviour of the lower classes as well: snot blowing and spitting etiquette has been passed down. One reason manners have changed over time is that people"s views of what if healthy have also changed. Cultures are not monolithic and frozen entities but rather are fluid and constantly evolving as new ideas emerge and conditions change. By the late pleistocene era, humans had already settled in a more diverse range of physical environments than any other species. The kinds of foods that are available within a given ecology affect the kinds of foraging (hunting) behaviours that people engage in. In cultures in which the environment is more benign and food is plentiful and more easily acquired, more androgynous gender roles are more likely to emerge.
