Document Summary

Variable: characteristic of an individual hat takes on different values, has two types: * categorical variable: fits into one or more groups/categories. Distribution: tells us what values a variable takes and how often. Collect data through: published source, designed experiment, survey and observational study. Distribution of a categorical value gives either count or percent. Bar chart shows & compares the counts, pie chart lets us see how much each group from a whole forms. Joint distribution: proportion by dividing cell entry by total sample size. Marginal distribution: distribution of a single variable in a two way table i. e total men divided by total sample: marginal distribution of gender. Conditional distribution: condition on the value of one variable and calculate the distribution of the other variable i. e conditional distribution of binge drinking women: total drinking women/total women. Independence: conditional distribution of one variable does not depend on the other; proportions must be the same.
