EEB466H1 Study Guide - Midterm Guide: Oldman Formation, Geologic Time Scale, Alpha Diversity
Document Summary
Eeb 466 section 3: david evans. Lecture 1: paleontology- biodiversity through time. Cenozoic occurred 65mya to current. Evidence of first life forms existed without oxygen, roughly at the birth of earth, 3. 5bya. Land plants first appeared 450mya, all life forms were in the ocean before this. The pull of the recent": our fossil collections and species count is more accurate in recent time. Less rock (erosion) destroys evidence and soft- bodied creatures are not preserved. Few specimens are found from older and older eras. Diversity curve graphs show that there are increasing amount of biodiversity towards now, but is really a flat curve. Paleontology: is the study of prehistoric life. It includes that study of fossils to examine evolution and biotic interactions through time. Fossils and the rocks they are embedded in give information on geological time and environment. Can only be preserved in sedimentary rock and deposited usually in water, beds tend to be planar, buried quickly.
