Document Summary

Motivation concerns the physiological and psychological processes underlying the initiation of behaviours that direct organisms toward specific goals: initiating factors, or motives include thoughts, feelings, sensations. Homeostasis is the body"s physiological processes that allow it to maintain consistent internal states in response to the outer environment. Allostasis states that motivation is not only influenced by current needs, but also by the anticipation of future needs. On and off switches for hunger are found in a few regions of the hypothalamus. Damage to it would eliminate the off switch which leads to overeating. Activity of hypothalamus influenced by hormones that are released in response to energy needs: our brains influence our body and our body influences our brain! A full stomach is a cue for satiation: the point in a meal when we are no longer motivated to eat: caused by cholecystokinin (cck)
