Vast majority of what we know and don"t know is through media. Before mass media, info was conveyed through spoken word or written down. No way to communicate a uniform msg to a large group of people in distance places quickly prior to advent of mass media. Mass media like print or radio differ from individual media like human speech and letters bc of their capacity to address large audiences in remote locations with relative efficiency. Critical media studies: social and cultural consequences of that revolutionary capability: mass media are communication technologies that mediate what we know and how we know, regular fixtures of everyday life. Media: broad term including cave drawings, speech, smoke signals, letters, film, tv, etc. 1973 and then declined into 2011: same trend with magazines, started stable, underwent rapid growth and, book circulation is also declining, however people are still reading. Internet, websites, online comp games and internet mobile telephony.
